it's great to visit some of those smaller attractive summits but i have this habit of turning what could be a small short pleasant hike into something a bit more exhausting. it's become a common trend since i've been looking into reaching all the wainwrights. this turned out to be a great hike but saying that i'd happily not do the slog up to high raise from the west side again. ouch!! a great day with several summits visited.
entering stonethwaite
looking back to stonethwaite
following the path below stonethwaite fell
eagle crag in the middle
eagle crag. now that's an attractive peak
we crossed over the water at smithymire island
very steep. a lot of huffing and puffing here. Pushing on through the burn.
looking down from the route up following this wall. It's doesn't look half as steep in the photo.
now for a bit of zigzagging on heron crag
looking out to rosthwaite fell and glaramara
narrow tracks making for an exciting climb
more zigzagging on heron fell
some short fun scrambles
on top of eagle crag. Wainwright no:1 of the day.
Sergeant's Crag, our next summit and a view down into Langstrath
Pano shot
heading for sergeant's crag
sergeant's crag summit
bowfell, esk pike and scafell pike way off in the distance
a closer look at the bowfell, esk pike and the scafell range
a small unnamed tarn
a very rugged ascent up to the summit of high raise. It's definitely time for some lunch
pano shot
the northwest top of high raise
low white stones
ullscarf
coldbarrow fell
low saddle
way off in the distance is skiddaw to the right and the lakes bassenthwaite and derwent water
blea tarn looking lonely and blencathra in the distance
looking out to high spy, maiden moor, dale head and hindscarth
the view from lords how
watendlath tarn from great crag
starting the descent to stonethwaite
lingy end with eagle crag and sergeant's crag at the back
a lot of steep steps
back down to stonethwaite
last look back at eagle crag. really enjoyed the easy scramble up it this morning
the end of a great day in the lakes. so grateful for the sunshine whenever i come here as you never know what you're going to get.
