As soon as we reached the summit of pillar we set out to find the flattest, greenest ground to pitch our tents on. Within 20 minutes we were all set up with sleeping bags out and mats inflated. i sat in the stone summit shelter and brewed up a coffee. paul offered me a generous dash of spiced rum and i ate one of those tuna meals you get in an aluminuim tin. i don't think you need great food on a mountain as everything seems to taste better after you have put the effort in climbing up.
geordie paced around the summit and found us a small area to achieve a phone signal and paul tested out the echo effect into ennerdale below. that was some pretty impressive echoes reverberating through the valley. just like most of the day we had the summit to ourselves and you simply couldn't ask for better weather conditions. it wasn't cold and there was no wind. when we stopped talking it was perfectly silent.
as the sunlight started to fade, lights started to appear in the distance around us. we could see scotland, the isle of man and morecombe bay. we could even see the blackpool strip, 50 miles away.
when we bedded down for the night, i climbed into my tent and tried to listen out for anything. it was so still my tent didn't move or flap at all. all i heard before i fell asleep was the sound of what i assumed to be an eagle circling the summit.
i perfect wild camp! well apart from a wet cloudy morning.
